Platform Rules

PLEASE READ THIS DOCUMENT CAREFULLY AS IT SETS OUT THE RULES FOR USING GENERATION GLOBAL

What's in these rules?

These rules set out the terms that apply when you use our platform and what you can and can't do when using it. The terms apply whether you are using the Generation Global website or the mobile app (the Platform).

Who we are and how to contact us

Generation Global is an educational programme of the Tony Blair Institute. Tony Blair Institute is a company limited by guarantee, registered in England and Wales, under company number 10505963. Its registered office is at One Bartholomew Close, London, EC1A 7BL, United Kingdom.

To contact us, please email helpdesk@generation.global.

Who these rules are for

These rules cover use of the Platform by young people participating in Generation Global's Ultimate Dialogue Adventure, and by Educators using the Teacher Portal.

PROGRAMME PARTICIPANTS

Our programmes are for young people aged 13-17 only

Our programmes are for use by young people aged 13-17 only. If you turn 18 whilst you are taking part in a programme, we will allow you to continue using the Platform for 9 months after your 18th birthday, in order to give you time to finish the programme. After that time, your account will be automatically closed. In these rules, Programme Participants means those who are aged 13-17 (and by exception, 18 year olds who have been given 9 months to finish a programme). Other than Educators, who are only allowed to access the Teacher Portal, no one under 13 or over 18 and 9 months may use the Platform.

We take measures to ensure Programme Participants are the correct age

We take the steps described below to make sure Programme Participants are the correct age:

  • When you register you must provide your correct date of birth (or if you do not know your date of birth, the date that you believe, in good faith, is your date of birth or as close to it as possible). If you are not between 13 and 17 years' old when you register, you will not be permitted to create an account.
  • When you participate in a video conference you will first be held in a waiting room so that we can check your name against the list of participants registered for that conference. If your name is not on the list of participants or you do not appear to be the person listed, we will not allow you to enter the video conference.
  • Once you enter the video conference, you must have your camera on and keep it on at all times during the session.
  • No one, other than the Programme Participants who have registered for that particular conference and their Educators, are permitted to watch or participate in a video conference. If we see or hear anyone else on the video conference they will be asked to leave and if they do not do so, they will not be permitted to remain in the video conference.
  • The conference room will be locked shortly after the start time to prevent anyone who has not registered from attending.
  • Written contributions are moderated (see We may moderate the contributions you post). Our moderators are trained to identify language that might indicate the contributor is not within the age range for Programme Participants.
  • If we suspect someone is not within the age range for Programme Participants, we may ask them for further information to verify their age and we may also suspend or cancel their account.
  • If you are not within the age range to be a Programme Participant, or if you provide false or inaccurate information regarding your age, your account will be cancelled and you will not be allowed to access the Platform.

Parents or guardians will be notified that you have joined the Platform

If you are a Programme Participant, you must provide correct contact details for your parent or guardian when you join the Platform and we will notify your parent or guardian when you register for an account. We will advise your parent or guardian to talk to you about online safety and that you must comply with these rules and the other terms that apply (see There are other rules that also apply to you) if you want to use the Platform. Please see https://generation.global/safeguarding-space for more details on our safeguarding approach and policy.

All contributions must be anonymous

All contributions made by Programme Participants, including written contributions made in the video conferences and dialogue spaces, must be anonymous. You must only identify yourself by your first name and the country where you live. You must not provide any other information that might identify you (for example, your surname or family name, your address, email, mobile number or social media details).

We may moderate the contributions you post

The Platform is fully moderated by a combination of human moderators and screening using automatic filters. Programme Participants' first contributions, contributions flagged by our automatic filters and those reported to us will be checked for compliance with our Content Rules. We will try to publish as many contributions as we can, but we cannot guarantee that your contributions will be published. We also cannot guarantee how quickly contributions will be posted as this will depend on the number of contributions the moderators need to review and their availability.

We reserve the right to refuse, remove, change or to disable access to, any contribution that we believe may be or is in breach of the Content Rules, causes damage to another person's reputation, or which we consider is unlawful or in violation of anyone else's rights.

Where we have a legal obligation to you or anyone else to oversee, monitor or moderate the Platform or any other service we provide on the Platform, we will do so. However, where no such obligation exists, we reserve the right to stop moderating the Platform at any time.

Even if we do moderate contributions, we are not responsible as the author, editor or publisher of any contribution. Just because we moderate contributions, that does not mean the views and opinions expressed in a moderated contribution necessarily reflect our views and opinions.

We are not liable or responsible for any loss or damage arising from contributions posted on the Platform by any user, or any subsequent use of those contributions by any person or for a breach of the Content Rules by any user.

EDUCATORS

Educators may join the Teacher Portal

Educators may only join the Teacher Portal (they may not participate in a programme on the Platform). If you are an Educator, you can create a virtual class of your students and assign tasks and topics to them, book live conferences for them and participate in professional development activities.
