Festival of Hope TIPS | Erode, Tamil Nadu, India
"Learner profiles: Live it, don't laminate it!" is what PYP Coordinator, Syeda Humera Riyaz emphasised to the gathering of the first Festival of Hope in South India, hosted by The Indian Public School (TIPS) in September 2024.
As the TIPS community reported...
The Festival of Hope provided us a great platform where students could celebrate the actions taken by them through various forms to bring an impact to the community. Students voiced out their thoughts creatively on the final day. The actions showcased by students were inspired by their unit of inquiries and some came up as their passion projects.
The entire school community was a part of the celebration, which included school leadership, parents, students, and teachers, with around 600 people who attended the event.
During the Festival of Hope, learners became advocates for change—educating their parents and peers on simple yet impactful ways to protect the Earth and celebrating their passions through actions. For some students, inquiry not only deepened their understanding of sustainable living and creativity but also inspired hope for a better future.
Through research and discussions, some students discovered how deforestation, heavy rainfall, and human activities had contributed to environmental challenges, motivating them to voice the need to take meaningful action. Students showcased how creativity drives innovation, cultural expression, and social awareness, making meaningful connections to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
From designing sustainable cities with LEGO, illustrating the cultural significance of water through doodle art, and advocating love for animals through a shadow puppet show, to crafting pebble art for hope and collaborating on Wings for Hope, each station reflected their inquiry, passion, and commitment to change. This journey beautifully captured the evolution of their Passion Projects, a street play highlighting how creativity transforms ideas into meaningful action, making the festival a true celebration of learning, innovation, and hope.
Students also showcased their learning through a captivating array of art forms from around the world, making connections that spanned from local to global. They raised awareness about ancient and fading art forms, demonstrating how incorporating them into daily life can enhance well-being. Their presentations covered the background of each art form as well as the creative works they produced while conducting their inquiries. This also provided parents with the opportunity to experiment with different artistic mediums under the guidance of the young inquirers.
Through the Festival of Hope, learners showcased their understanding of imagination as a powerful tool for creativity and expression, translating their learning into meaningful actions. In "My Artistic Dad," they explored how imagination shapes perception, analyzing drawings based on given instructions. "I-Connect" encouraged them to respond to thought-provoking scenarios through quick sketches and writings, fostering self-expression. "Mom and Me" promoted sustainability as students created accessories using eco-friendly materials, demonstrating resourcefulness. "Whispers of Wonder" allowed them to express imagination through music, co-creating a song that conveyed emotions and ideas.
This joyous occasion brought together the entire learning community, celebrating the richness of diverse cultures and the students' creativity. The event was a true testament to their hard work and the spirit of unity within our school!
The children enjoyed the day, celebrating their action and using it as a platform to exhibit their creativity, confidence, and collaboration. They left home with hearts filled with joy, pride, and inspiration.
