How we think about impact

The Dialogue Exchange learning journey moves through three broad layers.

Awareness

Young people understand what dialogue is and why it matters for peaceful and inclusive societies.

Practice

Young people understand and practise the five core skills of dialogue through interaction with others.

Transformation

Young people are able to apply dialogue as a transferable capability in how they participate in the wider world.

Data is embedded within the learning experience so that we can assess programme effectiveness, improve what we do and understand how participation relates to changes over time.

Attitudinal change

Dialogue Exchange measures several aspects of how young people perceive and relate to difference.

Diversity awareness

Among matched participants completing both baseline and subsequent progress measures, perceived exposure to people with different beliefs, values or backgrounds increased:

  • Neighbourhood: +5.6 points
  • Country: +4.2 points
  • World: +4.0 points.

Warmth towards difference

Participants' reported warmth towards people with different backgrounds increased:

  • After continued participation: +5.8 points compared with baseline
  • Following video conference participation: +8.3 points compared with baseline.

Perceived commonality

The Inclusion of Other in the Self measure examines how much commonality young people perceive with those from different backgrounds.

The matched cohort increased by 2.7 points between baseline and subsequent measures.

* Within-subjects longitudinal design. Only participants who completed both the baseline (Learning Dojo) and at least one Progress Tracker are included, enabling a matched-cohort comparison of the same individuals at both time points. Each student contributes one baseline response and their final follow-up response on this measure. This reduces bias that would arise from comparing different respondent groups over time.

* Matched longitudinal descriptive view. Group 0 shows baseline warmth for participants who later completed at least one post-video-conference warmth reflection. Groups 1-5 show the mean warmth from the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th chronological post-video-conference reflection among participants who attended at least that many conferences. Group 6+ combines reflections from the 6th conference onward. These groups show reported warmth at successive stages of participation and provide a descriptive view of how continued participation in video conferences may contribute to warmer attitudes over time.
