BEYOND THE SHAME

In Kenya, period poverty and stigma force many girls to miss school, limiting their education and future opportunities. Beyond the Shame tackles this crisis by teaching students to make affordable, reusable pads from banana fiber—a sustainable, locally sourced material—while providing vital menstrual health education.

In Kenya, period poverty and stigma force many girls to miss school, limiting their education and future opportunities. Beyond the Shame tackles this crisis by teaching students to make affordable, reusable pads from banana fiber—a sustainable, locally sourced material—while providing vital menstrual health education.

Our project empowers girls with dignity, keeps them in school, and reduces environmental waste from disposable pads. By breaking the silence around menstruation, we foster gender equality, support SDGs 4 (Quality Education), 5 (Gender Equality), and 12 (Responsible Consumption), and strengthen community resilience. With this grant, we aim to:

  • Train 500+ students in pad-making and menstrual health.
  • Distribute 1,000+ reusable pads to underserved girls.
  • Reduce school absenteeism by 50% in target schools.
  • Promote eco-friendly alternatives to combat plastic waste.

Together, we’re turning shame into confidence and creating lasting change
