The Biokeeper's Gardens
We love our school campus and we do well for space as an inner-city school, but we’ve noticed our school’s lack of biodiversity and nature.
The field grass is plastic, the ground is concrete, and the greenery is cut into little squares; There are many birds, but most students cannot name them – some do not even see birds flying by as we are so consumed by our technology we forget to look up and take notice of the world around us. We want our community to first acknowledge nature, love it, and then bring more of it to campus. With that said, we plan to build a rooftop garden and a circular garden to attract more insects, pollinators, and birds to create an immersive learning space in nature and foster the emergence of projects that enhance biodiversity and sustainability at BCIS. To document our process, we encourage students to monitor biodiversity with us through community tallying events using platforms such as “ebird” and “iNaturalist,” and involve themselves in day-to-day gardening activities.
