Crossing barriers
We are creating a board game targeted towards 11–13-year-olds in Wales, that is inspired by refugees' experiences of immigration and integration.
It is an incorporation of the typical ‘snakes and ladders’ with a twist where cards determine your journey and the decisions you have to make. Participants act as refugees having to leave their country and face the challenges and decisions that come with their journey as well as their integration into Wales.
The game explores the ideas of chance, inequality, and discrimination that all shape refugees' experiences. We aim to have this board game incorporated in senior schools around Wales where we will run workshops in the aim that through this game we can encourage older children to question perhaps pre-existing negative views of refugees and to evoke further compassion and understanding towards refugees.
We also aim through the board game to encourage older children to form greater opinions to question the media and current growing anti-immigration movements around Wales.
