FarmAble – The Hydroponics Project
Have you ever imagined what would happen if you ran out of land to grow crops?
What would happen if soil became uncultivable? What if there wasn’t enough food to feed 8 billion people? Well, a single problem is the root of these maladies: soil degradation! Soil degradation is the deterioration in soil that stifles our ability to grow produce. If soil degradation continues, we will lose millions of hectares of agricultural land by 2050. Since the world is forging ahead toward sustainability, why should the agricultural industry be behind the eight ball? A simple solution to this problem is hydroponics: a method of growing plants without soil using inert mediums. With hydroponics, we can increase growth rate, increase yield, reduce water consumption, and even create farms that extend vertically! The Hydroponics Project aims to develop an indoor, large-scale, vertical hydroponics farm in our school. This project will not only be a bold step toward eradicating soil degradation, but also a leap forward in changing the mindset of people toward novel forms of farming, bringing about awareness and promoting sustainable change in our community. Hydroponics is undoubtedly the future of farming and we want to usher in a greener tomorrow.
