Girls Biology Olympiad is the first competition in the world dedicated to inspiring high school girls to pursue careers in Biology while empowering them to protect ecosystems, understand women’s health, and use science for social good.

The Olympiad includes two main tracks: an interpretive exam and a research proposal submission, complemented by online workshops, a blog that highlights the stories of girls in biology, and a safe online community for discussion and collaboration.

The initiative addresses key challenges such as the lack of female role models in school books, gender stereotypes, and unequal access to opportunities, especially for low-income, Black, Indigenous, and rural students. Outstanding participants are recognized with medals, certificates, and thematic awards that celebrate their dedication.

In partnership with the Girls in Olympiads movement, Brazil’s only network focused on female empowerment in olympiads, we have become the official Girls Biology Olympiad in the country. With the support of the IB, we hope to expand to other Latin American countries, reach between 3,000 participants in our second edition, mobilize 100 girl-led scientific research projects, and host an in-person climate event in partnership with Brazil’s Ministry of Women, impacting 160 public school students in the state of Minas Gerais.
