Project for Accessible Radio Telescopes

Due to monetary and accessibility constraints, many rural Australian schools are unable to afford telescopes and hence limited in their study of the universe.

Due to monetary and accessibility constraints, many rural Australian schools are unable to afford telescopes and hence limited in their study of the universe.

We seek to empower affected students and educators by providing rural schools with the necessary equipment and knowledge to engage in radio astronomy, and hence hope to help address the stark contrast in education between urban and rural Australian settings.

The Project for Accessible Radio Telescopes is the product of these aspirations and our initiative to design, manufacture and distribute telescopes to support rural students in their endeavours in the study of astronomy. We aim to produce a low-cost, simple yet reliable telescope design, capable of recording signals at the 21-cm line, an important frequency band associated with galactic hydrogen, then to manufacture these instruments to distribute freely amongst high schools and colleges classified as remote or very remote by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

As students who have a shared passion of learning, we dream of inspiring other students, providing them with enriching opportunities we were fortunate enough to experience, and sparking in them the love for STEM that these experiences sparked in us.
