Rattan For Life
"Rattan For Life" aims to safeguard the village of Hinas Kiriin South Kalimantan, one of the few remaining untouched by mining or palm plantations, where the villagers rely on their surrounding natural resources.
However, the depletion of these resources leaves the village vulnerable to exploitation. With the support of IB, I intend to purchase rattan seeds for the villagers to plant. Different from other types of trees, rattan grows by propagating or climbing on surrounding trees. Farmers choose to harvest and utilize rattans instead of cutting down the main tree in which rattan grows around. This is advantageous because rattans extraction doesn’t harm the environment as they regenerate within just 7 years, making it a highly renewable resource. Rattans are also renowned for their ability to prevent deforestation and soil erosion. In addition to planting rattans, we aim to empower the villagers by teaching them how to craft rattan wood into products for income generation. The overall goal is to encourage regular cultivation to protect the ecosystem while also educating villagers in rattan crafting to stimulate economic growth through product sales.
