Recycling wasted pencil-shavings and creating eco-friendly products
My primary schooling exposed me to environmental hazards/climate change along with knowledge about United Nations SDGs. My classroom was an inspiration for this project to utilize wasted pencil shavings in schools.
This project is aligned with SDG 13. It creates a green ecosystem! It helps in conserving water, reducing plastic usage, converts waste to resources for agriculture, and inculcates a sense of sharing of resources. In the process, three new plastic-free and environment-friendly products are created i.e. Pencil-sharpening stations, Claywood pens & PE-Mulch!
My idea is to make Green-Bins (Pencil-Sharpening Stations)to collect pencil-shavings at schools. Much like wooden chips, pencil shavings can be utilized as mulch in agriculture to aid in water conservation.Pencil-shavings are made of Cedar wood which has an insect-repelling property. This makes Pencil-shavings the perfect mulching candidate for agricultural farms.
My project involves producing wooden pencil-sharpening stations and selling them to schools. Schools are powerhouses of raw-material(pencil shavings) and act as resources of “mulch” production. My idea is to create a self-sustained system within the school where pencil-shavings produced in school are used as mulch in school gardens to conserve water. My project expands beyond the school to residential societies to provide unused mulch for terrace gardens.
