Saree Stories

Saree Stories is an initiative that upcycles pre-loved sarees into garments and accessories, addressing two urgent global challenges: fashion waste and the fading of cultural heritage.

Saree Stories is an initiative that upcycles pre-loved sarees into garments and accessories, addressing two urgent global challenges: fashion waste and the fading of cultural heritage.

While 92 million tonnes of textiles are discarded globally each year, countless intricately woven sarees sit untouched in closets, too sentimental to throw away, yet seldom worn. Meanwhile, traditional artisans and weavers face shrinking demand and limited opportunities.

Saree Stories breathes new life into these fabrics, honoring the craftsmanship behind them while promoting conscious fashion. Every product is handmade in collaboration with local artisans, and all proceeds are reinvested into skill-development workshops for underserved groups, including girls in juvenile homes and widowed or economically vulnerable women. These sessions teach upcycling, sewing, and design, enabling participants to gain creative confidence and sustainable livelihood skills. Through interactive workshops, a student-led blog, and a growing social media presence, Saree Stories builds a community of young changemakers committed to mindful consumption and ethical fashion. Volunteers contribute by sorting fabrics, co-designing products, and spreading our message.

With support from the IB, we plan to scale Saree Stories across schools and communities worldwide, proving that tradition can be a powerful tool for environmental action, cultural storytelling, and equitable opportunity.
