Solar-powered RO system using micro-algae
This project presents a solution to lack of potable water in developing countries by effectively using natural resources (algae, sunlight).
This project presents a solution to lack of potable water in developing countries by effectively using natural resources (algae, sunlight). Micro algae are used to purify the waste water (they remove ammonia, phosphate and nitrate, which are present in large quantities in waste water), making it suitable for irrigation and sanitation. To make it potable, the water is further purified through reverse osmosis (through solar power). Also, the algal biomass can be converted to bio-boosting fertiliser, a natural nutrient for soil and plants.
About two billion people worldwide don’t have access to safe drinking water, including 1.2 billion people lacking even a basic level of service. Closer home, in India, ~90% diarrhoea deaths, mainly in children, are caused due to lack of access to safe, clean drinking-water. My endeavour is to take a small step in providing clean drinking water to those who don't have access to it, while also setting an example that could be followed on a large scale.
